I think it’s safe to say that there’s little, if anything at all, that I won’t do for this school.

Yes, that’s me below… 14 seconds… it is worth the investment

Both pre and post dunking I had a great time perusing the Carnival hosted by the West Valley campus on Saturday. There was a water maze, an obstacle course, a train, extreme martial arts, a dance troupe, fantastic vendor booths and terrific performances by LILA students including 11th grader Daniella Rasho whose talents I’ve mentioned before; all made possible by the outstanding volunteers!

The raffle was a success and awarded impressive prizes including an iPad2 (donated by our generous board of trustees) and a vacation in Mexico!

What a great event! Our parent and staff volunteers, led by Crystal Hines, deserve a huge thank you for putting together what we hope will become an annual tradition for the campus!

PARTICIPEZ.jpgHere’s an idea – LILA parents talk with LILA parents about how to best support their child(ren)’s education and success at LILA… I love it!

Former LILA parents and founders of professional development group Bluepalm, Jackie Planeix and Tom Crocker are hosting two 90-minute, interactive workshops in September on the Los Feliz campus.

All LILA parents, from any of our campuses are welcome to attend this event.  Daycare is provided for the Monday evening workshop!

If you are interested please send an RSVP email to losfeliz@lilaschool.com.

Whenever I introduce LILA to a group of prospective parents, I try to remind them that LILA is not only about bilingual education. LILA always aims to offer a rich, well-rounded curriculum for all of our students Preschool through high school…

However it must be said, the bilingual element is pretty impactful as well!

The Wall Street Journal published a report on the benefits of a bilingual education for Preschoolers and one of our Los Feliz parents shared it with me… In the event that you haven’t seen this yet, have a look at the link below and learn about how beneficial bilingualism can be in addition to being really cool.

I typically share print articles, I thought it would be nice to share video for once…

Last January our kids spent a wonderful week working with artist Hervé Tullet, a French children’s MG 1399author/illustrator, who has since signed with an English-language publisher and is now in stores everywhere … and a pleasant surprise is to find that he has posted pictures of his LILA experience on HIS official website! Have a look and see if you can spot LILA amongst the rich offerings the site provides… http://www.herve-tullet.com

Now, for those of you who follow what educational researchers have to say about the benefits of including the arts in education, here’s an article from one of France’s great educational minds, Philippe Meirieu, that appeared this summer in the Monde … Yes, the article is in French… but as my blog posts are largely monolingual, I figured it was time to give our French readers a leg up for once!  MEIRIEU

What is in the works for this year you ask? Spending a week with M. Tullet was so memorable that we thought we would kick it up a notch. Thanks to LILA parents’ generous contributions to our Annual Drive, we will be able to have an artist in residence come for a full month in May to work with the kids on a longer project. Follow the link for a sneak peak at this year’s artist … http://laurentmoreau.ultra-book.com/

AD 10-11 Report publishEvery year we campaign… we request, we explain, we advocate, we may even plead just a little… Each year more and more members of our community see the difference their donations make and more and more people contribute to help support our school!  Last year participation grew from 39% in 2009-2010 to 75% in 2010-2011 LILA-wide and brought in an additional $111,909 to our LILA budget to help fund many exciting projects for the 2011-2012 school year!

There are so many fantastic projects and so much to report – You will catch many in plain sight on your respective campuses but I know you are all looking forward to also reading about the fabulous things we were able to do in our annual fall fundraising LILA Gazette … soon to appear in a snail mail envelope coming straight to your home!  The third annual fundraising LILA Gazette is in production as we speak… we are so excited to share with you all the amazing ways your generous donations have contributed to educating our 900 LILA students.

Thank you for sharing your lives, your time, and also your personal resources. Most of all, I can’t thank each of you enough for entrusting your children’s education to us, and for being part of this slightly crazy bilingual journey that helps support our students as they grow into stronger, better prepared, lifelong learners.
