For the past two years, John Fleck and I have gone to speak at all campuses and meet
with parents. We call our circuit the “tuition tour” as the catalyst for the tour was a desire to explain the school’s finances and explain how the school allocates budgets. The fact
is that although the catalyst was a money issue, the tour has been a wonderful opportunity to share the school’s vision, its mission, its major projects, and what parents could expect
for the year to come.
The series of meetings are very rich as they provide an opportunity for parents to ask
questions and learn more about major projects we have in the works. It was deemed that this type of forum needed to occur every year to help set the tone for the coming year.
Therefore, we have set dates for our meeting this year a little earlier per parent
request. I will still call it the "tuition tour", although that moniker is too restrictive and the focus goes far beyond merely finances (even though we will discuss the
school’s budget). The schedule for all campuses is as follows:
Tuesday January 12, 2010: Pasadena Campus 4:00PM
Wednesday January 13, 2010: West Valley Campus 4:30PM
Thursday January 14, 2010: Orange Co. Campus 9:00AM
Thursday January 14, 2010: Los Feliz Campus 4:30PM
Friday January 15, 2010: Los Feliz Campus
9:00AM
The schedule is given for all campuses to allow people the opportunity to pick the date
and time that best suits their needs.
I look forward to seeing you all!

LILA Los Feliz went red on December
4th to commemorate World AIDS Day. Parents, students, and teachers alike all wore red outfits as well as red ribbons as our
6th-12th-grade students engaged in activities and presentations that focused on awareness and prevention.
First, the LILA Los Feliz Choir performed a multi-lingual
version of “We Are The World.” Next, youth motivational speaker and break-dancer, Patrick Perez, and friend, Gabriel, entertained our students with
their dance moves before Patrick presented on STD and pregnancy prevention. Thanks to two motivated 11th-grade students, Marion Sotin and
Lucie Gareton, we have an exhibit on HIV/AIDS statistics and information given in an effort to destroy the stigma surrounding this disease. Wrapping
up the commemoration, former LILA teacher and speaker, Sam Donlavy gave a sobering speech to our high-school students on the significance and consequences that one solitary decision can make on
their lives.
Our students are currently recording their takeaway thoughts and
feelings on this experience in a special cahier. And, through our fundraiser of selling red ribbons this entire week, we have raised
$283.92. LILA mother, Giselle Noguera, was integral in this event and has found a generous donor who will match the funds raised by LILA and 100% of
all funds raised is going to APLA (The AIDS Project of Los Angeles). We have been both moved and educated as a community through this event and we
look forward to making this a yearly tradition in an effort to continually inform our students about HIV/AIDS facts and prevention.

On Saturday, May 2nd, members of the Los Feliz campus community, in conjunction with City of Los Angeles Councilman, Tom LaBonge, partnered with Prospect Studios representatives to
participate in a joint community outreach project. The chosen task consisted of cleaning up one
of the many public stairways that crisscross
the neighborhood, this one located at the intersection of Radio Walk and Deloz in Franklin Hills. The purpose of this collaboration was not only to underscore the importance of our good neighbor responsibilities, but also to engage in a project that the
local community would appreciate. And the neighbors have definitely reacted positively!
After parking at Prospect Studios, a dozen Los Feliz parents and students met several studio employees at 9 a.m. and proceeded to walk
up the hill to the enormous, concrete stairway. Armed with shovels, rakes, brooms, shears, gloves, face masks and positive energy, the
volunteers worked diligently to remove a wall of thorny vines
and clean up the dirt and trash that had settled on the stairs
over many years. After three hours of hard work, the stairway was transformed - not only clean, but accessible once again to its neighbors, several
of whom had driven by and both thanked and congratulated the team of volunteers for their fantastic efforts.
LILA would like to thank the following staff, parents, and students who helped reach out to our community in this Neighborhood
Appreciation Project: John, Ruth, and Andrea Fleck; Laura Greene Roubicek; Jonathon Allen; Diane and Sebastian de Warren; Chouket and Cody Weglein;
James Fish and Sabine Claus; Jeff Bos-Mast; and Marius Chevalier.
We hope to make these neighborhood adventures an ongoing project and will keep you informed of future dates so more members of the
LILA community can participate. If you have your own ideas for worthwhile projects near your campus, please let us know.

The third annual Paige Gleeson Tournament took place on the LILA-Orange County campus
last Friday, May 1st. This year, the sports-oriented activities for Kindergarten through 6th grade took place for about an hour in the morning and then students had
their normal lunch break before returning to their next class. At 2:00 p.m. the PTO organized a kermesse with the help of the teachers.
All the parents were invited to join their children to enjoy the little carnival games together for the rest of the afternoon.
Paige Gleeson was one of our former students. She passed
away three years ago at the age of 9. She was very much involved in sports; she especially enjoyed the camaraderie and competitiveness of play. To honor her memory, LILA started
up the Paige Gleeson Tournament as a way of enhancing camaraderie and competitiveness within our LILA community. For this special event, we asked that each student wear one of her favorite
colors: purple, orange, red, and apple green.
Thank you Volunteers – parents and staff alike – for all of your efforts. It was a
colorful, happy day… Paige would have enjoyed it tremendously!

The French Ministry of Education mandates the
elementary curriculum for all subjects taught at LILA. For PE, the program is broken into four areas. One area of the program relates to a student’s ability to successfully be able to
perform a timed/measured activity. The activity that LILA used this year to cover this area of the curriculum was cross country training. Students had to essentially build their endurance
running. To bring meaning to this very important, albeit at times, challenging “sell” for teachers, the pedagogical team and the teachers decided to organize the first ever inter-campus cross
country games. Over the course of two days, all four campuses met at Griffith Park where LILA held its very own cross country competition. The first day was reserved for Cycle Two students
(kindergarten, first, and second grade) and day two was for Cycle Three students (third, fourth, and fifth grade). The event was a huge success! Students ran, classmates cheered for their
friends, and teachers saw the long unit on running come to a very successful end. All could see that next year the kids would see ahead of time what they were working towards and really “train”
for the games… Thanks to the help of talented parent photographer Cynthia Smalley, and the more amateurish attempts of both Jennifer Dermer, English Program Coordinator, and myself, we were
able to cover all the events. The slide show below, that I prepared for you, is a combination of all these pictures.
