Every summer LILA welcomes students, returning campers and new families for several weeks of activities, friends and
French.
This year we had one of or biggest camps ever with roughly 200 students in attendance on the four campuses.
With field trips every day, activities to introduce a new language and a dedicated staff, our camp was a huge success – as
always.
Have a look at the video below for one last taste of summer as we enter the back-to-school season.

Our students never cease to amaze me, and I know this, so I wasn’t surprised but most definitely pleased
when I first heard Daniella Rasho sing at this year’s graduation.
She has a beautiful voice, so I didn’t hesitate to recommend her to perform for the Bastille Day Celebration hosted by the Consulat
de France this July 14th.
I recently received a message from her mother, who was kind enough to share the Consulate’s video compilation of the event with
me.
As expected, Daniella did a lovely job singing the American National Anthem, and I wanted to share her performance with all of
you.
Bravo Daniella!
You can also see a shorter version of the video on the Consul de France website.

Have you ever noticed a typo in a book? A menu? A Brochure? If you’ve ever picked up the info (in French) at the ranger station in The Valley of Fire National park, you may have noticed more than
one or two…
In an effort to lend a hand, one of our fourth grade classes took the time to learn a little bit about the park’s services,
history, ecology and … marketing!
With a wealth of information and a little bit of formatting our kids helped the rangers correct and improve their French
brochures, and the park staff liked them so much, they’ve put the brochures to use!
Great job kids!

It is always pleasant to receive validation for our parental choices… In late May an article appeared in the New York Times
(pdf below) which was an interview with researcher Ellen Bialystok. Ellen Bialystok is a name I know very well… She is one of the world’s leading researchers in bilingual education.
If you Wikipedia her it will tell you this:
Ellen Bialystok is a Canadian psychologist who is currently a Distinguished Research Professor of Psychology at York University as well
as an Associate Scientist at the Rotman Research Institute of the Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care.
She received her Ph.D. from the University of Toronto in 1976.
Her main interest in research has been in the area of bilingualism and its effect on language
and cognitive development in children. This area has expanded to also include exploration of adult processing and how bilingualism from a young age affects the cognitive skills, and
retention of these skills, with aging. She has also worked in the areas of literacy acquisition in children, metalinguistic awareness models and second language acquisition, and the
development of spatial cognition.
In addition to teaching and doing research, she has lectured in universities around the world, spanning four
continents.
Take a couple of minutes to open the pdf… it is a good interview and certainly should reassure many of our parents that the
choice they made in putting their kids in a bilingual program is in fact a good one… Two things I take away from the short article… first of all, being bilingual is more than just
knowing two languages… and secondly, something I repeat over and over to families… this is not a quick fix… it is not as if a couple of years in a French school “should do the trick.” Being
bilingual is a habit of the mind, something that comes with ongoing, constant and lifelong practice.

2011-2012 will be my 6th year as LILA Head of School… and when I take a look back at who we were and just how far
we have come, it is a little overwhelming. LILA will hit the 900-student mark this year for our first time ever. We have kids going to Princeton, McGill and Oxford… inspection reports
are stellar… I am extremely fortunate to have a team of educators working with me who truly provide an extraordinary educational experience for our kids.
I am regularly blown away by the work done in the classroom and even got goose bumps at the Pasadena end-of-year show this
year: a showcase of the wonderful work the teachers and students put together for the parents. I asked the teachers to give me copies of their videos and want to share a couple that come
from the 1st grade B in Pasadena… somehow… these videos represent, to my mind, what LILA has become. Cutting edge, state of the art… see this year-end project where the students
built a video (with a lot of support from their teacher Samuel Mignery) where they shared their favorite moments in the year… the video incorporates interactive whiteboard technology, our oral
language program and so much more… it is a marvel… a true gem… all produced with Windows Live Movie Maker… Microsoft could use it as a commercial…
The second video, called ‘Flying Kids’… is a video/computer class project…. See how the kids created the illusion of flight…
they were each responsible for their own flight and the teacher put them all together in a montage…
Enjoy... you will not regret having taken the few minutes needed to see these two clips.
