LILA’s Spanish teacher, Soraya Hassaine, worked very hard to set up an exchange opportunity for our secondary students to be able to live a real linguistic exchange to use the Spanish they were learning in class.  Her hard work paid off… In May, LILA 8th grade families hosted a group of students from Mexico City’s Lycée Franco-Mexicain in the first part of a two year project to have our kids experience the third language taught at LILA. Next year our kids are scheduled to go to Mexico to be received in the homes of their new friends.

Librarian, Marjorie Decriem prepared final interviews for your viewing pleasure.

Every year LILA celebrates Francophonie which is the world celebration of the French language.  Usually our format is pretty standard: each class on each campus studies a specific French-speaking country and creates a booth with activities so that all students can explore the French-speaking world on a special event afternoon.    This year we stepped it up a bit and the P.O. (pedagogical office) worked with teachers to discuss how we could make this year even more special.  The team decided to link the French language event with our “Projet d’Ecole” (the school’s 3-year pedagogical/educational strategic plan that guides our training and focuses where we want to improve).

The Area 4 of the projet d’ecole is sustainable development (this covers both citizenship – sustaining humanity, as well

as ecology).  The team decided that this year there would be a thematic view to the day.  How could we celebrate both our language and our commitment to a better world?  Our students would focus their research on French-speaking countries specifically looking at sustainable development.  What happens in other countries?  In order to make sure kids shared with more than their campus, the P.O. and teachers worked on the creation of a Google map that would identify each campus’ and each class’ project.  This interactive element allowed the P.O. to go a step further and Julie Higounet contacted the international Francophonie organization and they included us in their world watch section for the big day of the year.  The link still works so click on the picture below and you will see the live version of both our LILA Google map and the Francophonie organization’s website.

As part of a partnership with our local French consulate, we had the great opportunity to bring in a second artist in residence for our secondary students.  As part of a tour to promote the publication of his Lucille comic book, artist Ludovic Debeurme came to work with our LILA students.

Ludovic Debeurme 20100411 BD-Aix 1Over the course of a week, Debeurme got the chance to work with 7th and 8th graders as well as 10th grade IB.

7th and 8th graders were already working on a unit about comic strip art with LILA teacher/artist, François Paire and were fresh with notions of story board.  Debeurme introduced himself and his work to the kids showing them some illustrations, cover art, his own storyboards.  He then set up hands-on workshops for them to have them experience the various techniques surrounding comic book art (bubbles, the breaking-up into boxes of the story, etc…).  The 7th graders got a longer 4-hour workshop with the artist that allowed them to create their very own comic book.  The creative process launched a huge debate amongst students and Ludovic Debeurme was able to really get into important aspects of his creative process.

Debeurme also worked with 10th grade IB students to speak about technical aspects of comic book art and to encourage students to use this medium for their creative presentation portion of the IB exam.

The experience was extremely rich for students who were able to meet with the artist, discuss their projects with him directly, and ask him all sorts of engaging questions.

Over the last few years, the last week of school has changed dramatically for our elementary students.  What was traditionally the wind down at the end has become an eventful science week in which all campuses meet to participate in science competitions.  Students go from table to table, activity to activity, trying to solve problems and work out scientific challenges.  This year, the secondary decided to get involved and teachers worked together to get students to prepare for LILA’s first school-wide science fair.  To share the days with you, the P.O. (pedagogical office) has prepared slideshows for each day and Los Feliz librarian Marjorie Decriem also prepared a little video of the science fair.
