carnival+timePerhaps you had a chance to attend the June Kermesse hosted by the Pasadena campus, it was a blast!

The campus staff and parents put a lot of work into this event for the kids:  Carnival games were hand-made; tons of fun, delicious foods often made from scratch kept bellies full; music, and donated prizes kept young and not-so-young entertained!

In case you didn’t have a chance to attend, and just can’t wait for the next one in June, might I recommend you visit the upcoming Carnival on the West Valley campus. There will be games, snacks, and fun … and if that’s not enough of a draw… the event offers you the possibility to dunk your head of school…  yes indeed, I will be spending time in the dunk tank to support West Valley troops!

I hope to see you all there … Go easy on me!

Please forgive me while I gloat … this year, we proudly congratulated 80 Kindergarteners, 49 fifth graders, 30 8th graders and 18 high school seniors/terminals as they matriculated into elementary, middle school, high school and at college respectively. Great work everyone!

I have to say, I never quite get used to letting our kids go at the end of 12th grade … we’re never left with an empty nest, but each class makes its mark, and every student is missed even in the midst of college announcements, congratulations and well wishes.

This year’s students are off soon – near and far, congratulations to you all.

Many (most?) of you are familiar with the "I am LILA" video that opens our website (if you are not, you MUST take a few minutes and go to www.lilaschool.com and DO NOT skip intro).  It is 3 years old and pure magic. It is the creation of a group of parents including Pedro Pablo Celedon.  Pedro Pablo is a long time LILA parent and a true magician for telling a story through film.  Many moons ago (2003), he offered to "make a little clip for us" using both bits of new (at the time) and much older footage to help make the school's website a little more dynamic.  I gave him an old vhs of a winterfest from 1987 when I was a senior in high school and some random clips from events and shows throughout the years.  He took a few extra shots and made a short video clip...

I found it last night and thought I would share it with you... 1 minute and 17 seconds... a little piece of our history... you will recognize some of the faces... I recognize them all... :-)

CaptureAfter a very successful week for elementary students working with artist in residence Herve Tullet, it is time for some high school students to get a taste of the same energy and also get the opportunity to have direct contact with an artist to experience firsthand the creative process. 9th and 10th graders will be working in a video art workshop all this week with German-born artist Brigitte Zeiger.  Zeiger’s art focuses on trying to define the constantly evolving male/female identities.  She delves into and takes control of mediatized stereotypes and works with many artistic forms from sculpture to iconic symbols, through photo and video.  Her work has been presented at galleries like the Odile Ouizeman Gallery in Paris, the Tate Gallery in London, and New York’s White Columns, to name a few.

Families are invited to come see an expo, which will be the result of the week’s work, in the Los Feliz campus library on Friday.  For those who are unable to attend, we have a student video in the works that will be posted on the blog in the weeks to come.  Clicking on any picture in this article will bring you to the artist's website.

Sometimes I get lucky and someone writes an article for me and produces a video bringing my blog to life with a new voice… This submission came in French and my imprint is one of a translator… For this reason, you get the French first… scroll for the English version… and scroll a little further for the video…

**************

First of all, there is the ability to meet the artist… Insight into a whole different view of the world, into different areas and artistic forms that aren’t as well known…  But also the active discovery of the artistic process of creation.  To be alongside the artist and not just in front of the piece of art allows for a whole nArt 0427 (2)ew entry into the work and, as a result, a better understanding of the creative process…  An opportunity for personal and professional growth for our teachers and help for our students in their educational journey.

And then there is the presence of the artist within the world of school, almost like an intruder initially.  He must be welcomed, a place must be made for him and all must find a new equilibrium to work together….  When the artist invites the children into his creative process, he will not interact with them the same way their teachers do, he will break the rules and see them all in a different light….  By observing, by exchanging and confronting their own ways, both teachers and students will question their habits and approaches, they will transform and grow by virtue of having to ask these questions.

It was all these things that author- illustrator-artist Hervé Tullet brought to our LILA world a week ago.  His stay opened new doors through which our students could enter the creative process.

Reading his works out loud to the group… moments that overjoyed, disoriented, surprised, amused, and even jolted his audience…

Massive collective works of art… hundreds of meters of paper giving students the opportunity to create their own Hervé Tullet work by following his directions…

And ultimately an invasion of color taking over young minds… magic circles and dots coming alive…
