I'm always proud to report a success of one of our students, staff and/or families... this last weekend Los Feliz's art teacher Francois Paire was included in the Billboard Art Project.

The Billboard Art Project takes over roadside digital LED billboards to turn them into free public art venues for 24 hours or more.

Those in-your-face and colorful canvases that you see as you sit stuck in traffic are turned over to local and international artists for a little break from everyday advertising, presenting larger-than-life art in glowing colors.

Last week's winds took out the city of Pasadena and our little campus got hit pretty hard.  You drive down the streets of Pasadena now and it still looks like a disaster... yet it only took OUR campus 12 hours to get back on its feet... How you ask? There is no mystery... Philippe Detzen has an extremely dedicated and amazing team.  On Thursday, all teachers and staff worked all day to put the campus back together while the students were home...  Thank You Pasadena team!!!!

Yesterday Orange County kicked off the latest Writing to Share!

Because of the wind, it was held inside... but being confined to a smaller space really brought out how far the program has come.

What I saw: French and English teachers working collaboratively in their classrooms, moms and dad's engaging in the event, and kids being strategic about their pieces - reflecting on aesthetics and engaging their audiences.

Our community is embracing this program that we started only a year and a half ago, and our kids are excelling ... as usual.

Go us!

Writing to share is on the Los Feliz campus today and in West Valley on Thursday - do not miss it if you can help it!

Los Angeles was taken by surprise this week by a massive windstorm that semeed to take out powerlines all over the city and pieces of our Pasadena campus in the process.  We had two campuses that had to shut down.  It was all very dramatic.  The positive side to the whole process was we got to test out our fancy new schoolwide messaging system which did relatively well for a first time out...

Thought I would share a cute moment one of my Los Feliz families shared with me... despite the obvious constraints that a world with no electricity brings to our modern kids... some of our secondary find work-arounds to get the job done... now how cool is that!

As you all know, I am serving as the Interim Campus Director for Los Feliz on top of my Head of School duties for the duration of this school year.

I am happy to report that we had several qualified candidates respond to our Ads and last week our search committee of 9 (made up of a few LILA administrators, Board members, teachers and parents) held the in-person interviews.

Stéphane Planke 6After careful review, spirited debate, and self-analysis we have unanimously chosen Stephane Plancke, current West Valley Campus Director, as the next Los Feliz Campus Director (in charge of Secondary). Stephane is highly-qualified for this post: he has been a LILA employee since 1999, including WV campus director for the past 6 years; he has a Masters degree and a teaching credential (CAPES) in Math.  He taught both Math and Physics/Chemistry at middle school and high school levels at LILA, including French Bac and International Baccalaureate classes in Math; and he is currently completing his Masters in Educational Psychology and Counseling. Most importantly he is ready and
and eager to take on the new challenge the larger Los Feliz campus will provide him.

Stephane will slowly transition to Los Feliz for the remainder of this school year so he gets to better know the community and get re-acquainted with the campus. He will officially transfer here on July 1, 2012.
